SOUTH HADLEY, MA – Book publishers must rethink rights and royalties agreements with authors, according to an expert panel on the Google Book Settlement at BookExpo 2009, which was led and hosted by MetaComet Systems.

Entitled “The Value of ‘Free’: What the Google Settlement REALLY Means to Midsize Publishers — and how to establish rights agreements with authors when you’re selling books in ‘chunks,'” the capacity crowd heard panelists stress the importance for publishers to prepare themselves for the upsides and downsides to the Google Book Settlement. (The entire audio and transcript is available at: http://beyondthebookcast.com/whats-in-your-catalog/).

MetaComet Systems President David Marlin joined highly regarded consultants Laura Dawson of LJNDawson.com and Brian O’Leary of Magellan Media Partners in dissecting how the settlement will affect midsize publishers and what publishers should do to prepare. Both royalties payouts and establishment of rights could be profoundly affected and publishers need to simplify and clarify their royalties and rights contracts, Marlin said.

“I spend my days immersed in and advising on rights and royalties contracts, so believe me when I tell you that publishers need to be proactive in handling the new rights and royalties potential that the establishment of the Google Book Rights Registry represents,” Marlin said. The settlement, “provides a mechanism for creative entrepreneurs or existing businesses to use content in creative new ways.” The more clear-cut and simplified the rights and royalties agreements, the more likely that publishers will be able to take advantage of the new opportunities.
